Virgin and Child crowned on a crescent moon, sculpted in the round, with a relatively well preserved polychromy and gilt.
Southern Germany, most likely Tyrol, late 15th/early 16th century.
This is an original portrait of the Virgin Mary and Child, depicted at mid-body, typical of a certain type of sculpture that appeared in the late 15th and early 16th centuries in the West.
The Virgin’s face is elongated, and she wears a crown made up of three chequered rings on which are placed the fleuron points. A long, wavy head of hair covers her shoulders.
Old restorations to the polychromy and the gilt, but overall very good condition.
Limewood or poplar.
