Description

17th century wood panel sculpture carved in low relief, Italy or France The scene represented here the meeting of Nilus the younger founder of Italo-Greek monasticism with Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor. The episode retraces here the intercession of the old hermit Saint Nil of Rossano, founder of the Abbey of Grottaferrata, Basilian monastery, came to implore imperial clemency for the fate of antipope John XVI. Faced with the Emperor’s refusal, Nil would have called the eternal divine punishment on leaving Rome. He died in 1005, at age 90
