Oil on canvas representing “The Nativity of Mary” or “The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary” is one of the 20 Marian feasts of the Catholic liturgical calendar.The New Testament says nothing about the place and date of birth of Mary, mother of Jesus.According to an apocryphal gospel, Mary’s parents are called Joachim and Anne, and Mary’s birth is presented as miraculous, Anne being sterile.The house where she was born would be located near the Bethesda swimming pool (Lions Gate) in Jerusalem.Oil on canvas, autograph replica of the painting by Pierre de Cortone (1596-1669) kept in the Louvre (171 x 123 cm), painting reported as early as 1698 as needing a new frame or to be reintroduced (old Jabach collection, acquired from it by Louis XIV’s collection in 1662.We know of many uninteresting copies made between 1830 and 1870, but ours attracts attention;In addition to the fact that it was executed in the 17th century, and reintroduced in the 19th century, it is almost identical in size to the one that appears in the Caulet d’Hauteville sale in 1774, under number 25, as “painted by Pierre Mignard for the oratory of Mme de Montespan”, with dimensions 124 x 97
