Pair of Gouaches: “The Pilgrims of Emmaus” and “The Flight into Egypt,” France, 17th century

A finely executed pair of 17th-century French gouaches depicting two major episodes from the Christian Gospels.

The Flight into Egypt is recounted in the Gospel of Matthew (2:13–23). Following the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by King Herod, the Holy Family fled Bethlehem for Egypt before settling in Nazareth in Galilee. According to tradition, on their journey, the Virgin Mary rested at a site later venerated as the Kathisma (“Seat of Mary”), where a Byzantine church was built, the ruins of which remain today. This scene has been a recurrent subject in Christian art, symbolizing protection, piety, and divine providence.

The Pilgrims of Emmaus is based on the Gospel of Luke (24:13–35). On the morning of Easter, two disciples are traveling from Jerusalem to Emmaus, still mourning the crucifixion of Christ. The resurrected Jesus joins them on the road, but they do not recognize him. Only later, when he breaks bread and pronounces a blessing, do they realize his identity. This episode has inspired numerous artistic interpretations emphasizing revelation, faith, and the recognition of the divine in ordinary moments.

These gouaches are notable for their delicate technique, rich color, and careful narrative detail, reflecting the devotional and artistic traditions of 17th-century France.
