Oil on canvas representing Heracles bringing Alceste from the underworld to her husband King Admetus. Alceste, daughter of Pelias, sacrifices herself out of love for her husband Admète, king of the Phères, who is offered by Apollo the possibility of postponing his death. Heracles learns the news and goes to intercept Thanatos (Death) to take Alceste back from him. The two spouses are reunited. Very good quality of execution. The painting needs to be cleaned and refinished. Original canvas, later 19th frame. 107×87 with frame
