Rare pair of portraits of Westerners dressed as rich Chinese characters. French School, signed lower right Rose FAVRE, circa 1940.
. Painted on hardboard panels. The psychology of the characters is very well rendered in these portraits of witty people (artists, writers) who had themselves represented as Chinese or Japanese, a fashion that was all the rage after the appearance of Japonism in the 1870s. At the back of the male character, a painting on silk representing a marine scene (?).
Larges dimensions of 1.53m x 0,64 m.
