Large lacquered and gilt bronze Buddha in the position of the “Bhumisparsa mùdra”, or gesture of taking the earth as a witness.
This posture represents the Buddha’s Enlightenment, and holds a great place in Thai imagery, as it symbolises the victory over Mâra, god of desires, death and demons, who attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.
This gesture appears to the Thai people as an illustration of the greatest of miracles, and represents the peak of Buddha’s life.
Rare in these dimensions, and especially with its base.
Rattanakosin style, 2nd half of the 19th century.
