Virgin and Child Crowned, Spanish New World 18th century
Large oil on canvas depicting the Virgin and Child crowned by two angels, topped by a Phylactery “Hail Mary full of grace…” in Latin.
The vestments and decorations are very richly charged. The painter had a certain interest in the detail of the accessories, jewelry and brocades, a decorative richness that can be found in the hundreds of churches and monasteries built by the conquistadors in the 16th century. Despite this profusion, an impression of grace emerges from the whole.
Antique canvas, non-original frame, modern frame with gold leaf.
South America, Spanish New World (Mexico), 18th c.
total height : 136 with frame, width : 102
