Oil on canvas (perhaps a decorative door overlay?) showing Venus and Love in the guise of Cupid, her son.
Venus, goddess of love, seduction and beauty is leaning half-naked holding Love in her right arm.
In the background, two doves trying to mate, one of her attributes.
Her son Eros (or Cupid), naked, his quivers at his feet, is preparing to shoot an arrow at the male pigeon to help it mate.
From the Renaissance onwards, the Venus theme was a great favourite with painters and sculptors, who took up several images taken from the legend of Aphrodite.
French school, mid-18th century
