“A young painter in his studio in Antiquity”, oil on canvas signed upper left Urbain BOURGEOIS, circa 1880. Léon-Pierre-Urbain BOURGEOIS, born in Nevers in 1842, died in Paris in 1911. History painter and portraits, pupil of Cornu, Flandrin and Cabanel. 2nd Prix de Rome in 1863 (“Joseph being recognized by his brothers”), and in 1867 (“murder of Laïus by Oedipus”). In the Salon from 1865 (“the shadow of Samuel”), in 1876 (“Jesus Christ taken down from the cross”), in 1878 (“Justinien, emperor of the East”). Original canvas, cleaning. 19th century blackened wood frame richly molded. 104×77 with frame
