Description

Large oil on canvas “still life with Japanese umbrella”, signed below right Clle Prévost- Roqueplan, circa 1880. A bouquet of wild roses and white lilacs is arranged in a blue Japanese vase, a white dove stands beside it, a beautifully decorated Japanese parasol and a bunch of grapes forming the first plan. Daughter of Camille Roqueplan, born in 1835, she was dean of the Society of French Artists in March 1938, the year of her death. She held a literary salon in Paris and Montfort l’Amaury. Painter of genre and flowers, her teacher was Camille Roqueplan and Alfred Stevens. She exhibited at the Salon from 1878; honorable mention in 1881, bronze medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition. The Sens Museum keeps a painting of her. rear exposure label n° 959 Two reinforcement pieces were applied at the rear, probably to straighten out a distortion of the canvas. The painting has been cleaned. Period frame with some gilding wear and some old restorations at the corners.
