Oil on copper, Northern Italy, end of the 16th century.
Complex baroque pyramidal composition, almost mannerist. On three levels we see the Virgin and Child, in majesty on a throne, receiving the adoration of a saint to whom the Child gives the palm of martyrdom (this figure is an artistic representation of the Virgin Mary enthroned in the earthly world). As she is here surrounded by an angel and a saint, she is the central element of the precise terminology of the Sacred Conversation).
In the foreground Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist kneeling, showing the scene to the spectator with their arms outstretched.
Behind the throne, St. Joseph observes, his head resting on his hand.
Dominating the whole, an angel, in the 3rd foreground, throws roses on the fly, flowers with a high symbolic meaning. This work can form a pair with a “martyr of an unidentified saint” of the same period and of the same workmanship presented further on.
Wear, oxidation, restorations, but beautiful ensemble.
Northern Italy, circa 1580. antique natural wood frame (73×63).
